Popscorn · Quick Guide

Tag Every Customer.
3 Tags. That's It.

A visual guide for tagging customers when you upload them to Shopify — so we know who they are and who to email.
Step 01

Every Customer Gets 3 Tags

1
Where did they come from?
SOURCE
source:sweets-expo-2026
source:popcorn-festival
source:wholesale-inquiry
2
Can we email them?
CONSENT
consent:opted-in
consent:business-card
consent:no-opt-in
3
Who are they?
TYPE
type:retail-customer
type:wholesale-prospect
type:influencer
Step 02

Pick the Consent Tag

Did they sign up at a booth or fill out a form saying
"Yes, add me to your email list"?
YES
consent:opted-in
Safe to email
JUST A CARD
consent:business-card
Send permission email first
NO / UNSURE
consent:no-opt-in
Do not email
When in doubt → pick "no-opt-in". Better to skip emailing someone than damage our reputation.
Step 03

What the Spreadsheet Looks Like

sweets-expo-2026_upload.csv
A B C D E
First Name Last Name Email Accepts Email Marketing Tags
Jamie O'Brien jamie@sweetshop.com TRUE source:sweets-expo-2026, consent:opted-in, type:wholesale-prospect
Casey Nguyen casey@bigcandy.com TRUE source:sweets-expo-2026, consent:opted-in, type:retail-customer
Morgan Patel morgan@pops.com FALSE source:sweets-expo-2026, consent:business-card, type:wholesale-prospect
The Tags column holds all 3 tags separated by commas. Wrap the whole cell in quotes if you're editing the CSV directly.
Step 04

Upload in 5 Clicks

1
Fill the Template
Open the standard CSV. Add names, emails, and the 3 tags.
2
Open Shopify
Go to Admin → Customers
3
Click Import
Top right button. Pick your CSV file.
4

5

Step 05

How the Tags Get Used

Exclude type:wholesale-prospect
Wholesale follow-up email
Include type:wholesale-prospect consent:opted-in
"Thanks for visiting our booth!"
Include source:sweets-expo-2026 consent:opted-in
Every campaign always excludes
Always Exclude consent:no-opt-in
Remember

4 Simple Rules

01
Use the exact tag names. All lowercase. Dashes between words. No spaces. If a tag doesn't exist yet, ask before inventing one.
02
When in doubt → no-opt-in. If you're not sure they agreed to emails, tag them as no-opt-in. We can always reach out personally later.
03
Never blast a fresh upload. New customers go through a welcome email first — never straight into a big campaign.
04
Always log uploads. Date, source, count, who uploaded. One row in the Manual Upload Log sheet. Every time.
